asyla ten holt

Asyla ten Holt, a multidisciplinary artist born in Curaçao, has cultivated a rich and purposeful artistic journey spanning more than four decades. Having lived and studied in the Netherlands and Bonaire, she now resides in the Bandabou countryside of Curaçao, where she founded the Funark Foundation creative space dedicated to coaching children through the arts and cultural heritage.

Asyla studied at Kunstschool Eindhoven and specialized in Conceptual Art at Beeldende Vorming in Tilburg. She further developed her artistry in portrait painting at the Art Students League in Manhattan, pursued creative writing in Rhode Island, and deepened her knowledge of textile and silkscreen printing in the Netherlands and Suriname.

Her work explores the threads of historical memory, cultural performance, and post-colonial identity—often infused with humor, transformation, and depth. She expresses these themes using mixed media, quilting-inspired collages, slogans, and archival imagery, often highlighting Black society's resilience and creativity. Her portfolio includes digital photography, short art videos, and seasonal visual expressions, all aligned with her core message of healing and reimagination.

At the heart of her practice lies a "sustainable living art garden" where she combines creative work with herbal knowledge, meditation, and Eastern philosophy, cultivating inner balance and social awareness. Her art and prose reflect a commitment to cultural evolution and spiritual grounding.

Asyla remains active in cultural networks across the Netherlands, Germany, the USA, Suriname, and the wider Caribbean. Through Funark, she continues to inspire and uplift younger generations.
